🥢 Food Review

The menu at Whashoku is impressively varied, offering everything from ramen and katsu curry to sashimi platters and bento sets—plenty to suit whatever you're in the mood for. I’ve visited several times and tried a handful of dishes, but one that keeps me coming back is the Chirashi Don—my absolute favourite.

🍚 Chirashi Don

A bright, generous bowl brimming with cubed tuna, salmon, tamago (egg), crabstick, avocado, and a touch of ginger and wasabi, all layered over perfectly seasoned sushi rice. It’s topped with a light poke sauce that adds a savoury punch, enhancing the natural freshness of the seafood. The portion is hearty and consistently satisfying—deliciously well-balanced with the ginger and wasabi cutting through any richness. A standout dish that hits the spot every time.

🍤 Tempura Moriawase

A generous assortment of tempura featuring two prawns, two pieces of fish, and a variety of vegetables, all coated in a light, airy batter and served with a classic dipping sauce. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and how many pieces were included—it felt like great value. On my first takeaway order, the tempura impressively retained its crispiness even after the journey home. However, in later orders, the texture didn’t hold up quite as well—slightly soggy, though not unpleasant. Still enjoyable, but it hasn’t quite matched the quality of that first time.

🐙 Takoyaki

Soft, hot, nicely sauced octopus balls—reliable and tasty.

🎃 Pumpkin Croquette

Served as 4 halves (really two croquettes). Flavour okay, but the batter and frying technique felt less impressive. Comes with a side salad.

🍣 Rainbow Sky Roll & Snow Cone Rolls

Good visual presentation, but used crabstick instead of real crab meat. Fine taste, but slightly disappointing when expecting genuine crab.

🤝 Service

I’ve both dined in and collected takeaway from Whashoku, and the service has been consistently excellent each time. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and genuinely attentive. When my mum and I ate in, they were warm and quick to check in on us without being intrusive. For takeaway, the process is just as smooth—you can easily select a collection timeslot on their website, and the food is always ready promptly. On one occasion, someone even came out from the kitchen to greet me directly—a small, unexpected gesture that really stuck with me. Whether dining in or picking up, the team makes the experience feel personal and pleasant.

🍵 Ambience

Whashoku is a small, cosy spot with understated Japanese-style décor. Despite its compact size, the space feels open and inviting, with a sense of quiet spaciousness that makes it feel bigger than it is. It’s always clean and well-kept, with comfortable seating that makes it easy to settle in, whether you're dining solo or catching up with a friend. Tucked away in a peaceful part of East London, it offers a calm, intimate atmosphere that feels like a welcome escape from the city buzz.

🌕 Reflection - why we loved Whashoku Sushi & Bar: Japanese Restaurant in London 🫶

Whether you’re a Royal Wharf local or just exploring East London for the day, Whashoku Sushi & Bar is a fantastic choice for comforting, authentic Japanese food served with care. The menu is extensive, the portions generous, and the service consistently warm and welcoming.

With limited dining options around Royal Wharf, I’m genuinely glad there’s a Japanese restaurant—and one of such high quality—right in the neighbourhood. The variety on offer means there’s something to satisfy every craving, whether you’re in the mood for sushi, rice bowls, noodles, or a comforting bento.

What truly sets Whashoku apart is its blend of casual charm, quality ingredients, and heartfelt hospitality. It’s convenient—with both collection and delivery available—and accommodating, with halal-friendly options that make it a welcoming choice for a range of diners.

For all these reasons, I’m giving Whashoku a full 🌟 Azuki Approved rating. It’s a spot I return to often—and one I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone in search of a reliable, relaxed Japanese meal by the Thames.
